DURBAN
RATING CHART.
___________________________________________________ DURBAN RESTAURANTS Crit by “The Mother” FEB
2004. SO
ALL YOU DURBS RESTAURATEURS, WATCH OUT FOR OUR REVIWER. THE LANGOUSTINE - Hillcrest
Despite their Certificate of Excellence, they do not have dessert forks, but I found the oyster fork sufficed. Their prawns are good and brandy tart is superb. Recommended Waiting for CRH from Cape Town to double check
_________________________________________ GUIDO’S -
Heritage Market – Hillcrest Very Italian atmosphere. Thoroughly enjoyed the cannelloni, as one would expect.
_________________________________________
SHANHAI LIL
- Manors, Pinetown Very new, and pricey. However, in keeping with the history attached to this
landmark building, excellently appointed, with various restaurant areas and
specialties including a Deli Counter. Definite plus factor is an enormous area for children,
complete with jumping castle, mini train and railway line, slides etc. Deserves success. And for all you men who drink too much there is a Limo to
take you home. If you “aint got no buck” DO NOT GO THERE. Waiting for CRH from Cape Town to double check so no Star grading yet.
______________________________________ OYSTER BOX
- Umhlanga Rocks Recently under new management with resultant changes, not
necessarily for the better. (smaller portions and increased prices)
The restaurant is no longer open for luncheon except for a
Carvery on Sundays. Maitre D is friendly, efficient and welcoming. Would
go back by choice.
_________________________________________ TOP OF THE ROYAL
- Royal Hotel – Durban Always very good. Carvery is superb with a fantastic
selection. Welcomed as “old honored friends” and always given the
same table. Free parking undercover is also available as long as you
remember to get your parking ticket stamped. I want CRH from CT to visit here.
_________________________________________ POT & KETTLE
- On the Bothas Hill Road Need to book as the venue is ideal for visitors with its
spectacular views. Some Sundays they have what one could call “ante pasta”
set out on a huge round table where you help yourself, and then receive a price
ticket on what you have chosen. My Small Spinach Quiche was very tastey, as was the
Chicken salad.
______________________________________ ELDORADO SPUR
- Hillcrest
Can be recommended as usual. Enormous salad bar as well as hot creamed spinach and hot
butternut. My ribs where excellent. But prices vary and the staff appear to be in need of customer training. Spur HQ need to spend more time and money on this. Good family resty. Reccommended.
__________________________________________ THE AUBERGINRE
- Hillcrest Was not impressed at all. Only visited once. Will not go back.

Holiday Inn Garden Court Tel: (+27+31) 332 0388 167 Marine Parade Fax: (+27+31) 332 3696 Durban 4001
As said in the Home Page, the service everywhere was unbelievably excellent. The Holiday Inn Marine Parade was immaculate and the staff on duty bent over backwards to please. I walked into the MacRib and was pleasantly surprised by the friendly but very professional service. Both Nights I was served by Fatima. A wonderful person and lady (and no, I have never met her before) and very professional. What a pleasure. My compliments to both the Holiday Inn and to the management of that MacRib. The food was excellent. The first evening I tried the buffet and they have a good choice - great selection of curries or standard roasts. The next evening I tried their Calamari - excellent, fresh and professionally prepared.
